The Weeks End

The things worth staying in for. Not a trend roundup. Not a shopping list. More like a note slipped under the door that makes the weekend feel like it was planned all along. The furniture doesn't lead. The ritual does. But they're never far apart.

Great movie!

Film

Aftersun, 2022

Shot on 35mm and washed-out DV, the kind of footage found in the back of an old drawer. Aftersun follows a father and daughter on holiday. On the surface, almost nothing happens. But quietly, it becomes something else entirely. About what you miss in the people closest to you when you're not looking carefully enough. What it leaves you with isn't sadness, but a renewed appreciation of life.

And possibly an inability to get off the sofa. No judgement. That's what it's there for.

Music

Arctic Monkeys, Humbug

This was the album that divided people. The Sheffield lads disappeared into the Californian desert with Josh Homme and came back darker, slower, stranger.

Humbug isn't background music. It asks to be listened to. Which is definitely a weekend sort-of-thing. Unmistakably British in its dry sardonic darkness. But warm underneath. Like a grey sky and a heated room.

Clear your afternoon.

Book

No Idea is Final, The Talks

Not a book you finish. One you keep returning to. Quotes from the world's most interesting creative minds, arranged by theme. Open anywhere. Read a few. Put it down. Repeat until someone asks what you've been doing all afternoon.

Recipe

Honey Butter Cheddar Brioche Buns

Sharp cheddar. Salted honey butter. Dough that's somehow both rich and light. Brioche buns that will ruin your chances of going outside. You've been warned.
