Use Your Own Fabric

Customer’s Own Material (COM)

Upholster Your Piece in a Fabric Chosen by You

Our Customer’s Own Material (COM) service allows you to upholster your CloseCo. piece in a fabric sourced independently by you. Whether you’ve discovered the perfect linen, inherited a vintage textile, or are working with an interior designer, COM gives you complete freedom to create something entirely personal.

Every piece is handcrafted to order in our workshop using your selected fabric, carefully reviewed by our upholstery team before production begins.

How the Process Works

1. Place Your Order

Select Customer’s Own Material (COM) on the product page before checkout.

Once your order is placed, our team will contact you to discuss your chosen fabric and guide you through the next steps.

2. Share Your Fabric Details

Before sending your fabric, we’ll ask for details including:

  • Fabric supplier or manufacturer
  • Fabric composition
  • Fabric width
  • Martindale rub test (if available)
  • Fire retardancy information
  • Pattern repeat details (if applicable)

This helps us assess whether the fabric is suitable for upholstery and estimate the required meterage accurately.

3. Fabric Approval

Our upholstery team will review your fabric for:

  • Durability
  • Weight and composition
  • Suitability for upholstery
  • Pattern scale and repeat
  • Handling characteristics

Please note that not all fabrics are suitable for upholstery use. Certain delicate, lightweight, loose-weave, or heavily embellished fabrics may not perform well on upholstered furniture.

If we believe your chosen fabric is unsuitable, we’ll discuss alternative options with you before production begins.

4. Sending Your Fabric

Once approved, your fabric can be sent directly to our workshop.

We recommend:

  • Clearly labelling your order name and order number
  • Sending all fabric in one delivery where possible
  • Using tracked or insured shipping for valuable textiles

Our team will confirm once your fabric has safely arrived.

5. Upholstery & Production

Once your fabric has been received and approved, production will begin.

Each piece is handcrafted by our upholstery team using your supplied material, with careful attention paid to fabric placement, pattern alignment, and finish.

Lead times for COM orders begin from the date your fabric is received, rather than from the order date.

Fabric Quantity Guidance

Fabric requirements vary depending on:

  • The furniture piece selected
  • Fabric width
  • Pattern repeat
  • Directional prints
  • Plain vs patterned fabrics

Our team will confirm exact meterage requirements after reviewing your chosen fabric.

If your fabric has a large repeat or requires pattern matching, additional meterage may be necessary.

Important Information

Bespoke Orders

All COM orders are considered bespoke and become non-returnable once fabric has been received by us.

Natural Characteristics

Due to the nature of independently sourced fabrics, slight variations in texture, colour, or finish may occur.

While we take every care during upholstery, CloseCo. cannot accept responsibility for:

  • Fabric flaws supplied by third parties
  • Shrinkage or movement inherent to certain fabrics
  • Wear performance outside of manufacturer recommendations

Fire Regulations

For UK upholstery compliance, fabrics may require additional fire retardant treatment depending on composition and intended use.

Our team will advise if further treatment is necessary before production can proceed.
